Merge two families into one

Moving in together, or two families planning together? Here's how to bring everything into one family — even when both have children and routines.

Web appiOS app

In short: choose the family you want to continue in, and invite the other adult as a Parent under Settings → Family. Once the invitation is accepted, you share routines, appointments and the overview.

Before you start

In Morgenrutine, a family is a group with one owner, who pays for Pro, and a number of parents and children. Every adult also has their own group, which they keep no matter which families they belong to.

  • The family you merge into needs Pro — otherwise members can't be added. The free 14-day trial counts too.
  • Only the owner and parents can invite.
  • The person you invite doesn't need an account. If they don't have one, we create it when you enter their name.

Choose your shared family

Routines, appointments, chores and allowance belong to the family they were created in and can't be moved between families. So choose the family where most of your everyday life already is — usually the one with the most children and routines. The owner of that family is the one who pays.

Step by step

  1. Go to Settings → Family

Log in as the owner or a parent of the family you want to continue in.

  2. Invite the other adult

Choose Parent under “Invite by email” and enter the email. If they have no account, we ask for their name, and the button says “Create account and invite”.

  3. The other adult accepts

They get an email, log in with a code and choose Accept. In the iOS app, the invitation is under Settings.

  4. Choose the family as active

The new parent chooses the family under Active family — at the top of the menu in the web app, under Settings in the iOS app. New routines, appointments and chores are added to the active family.

  5. Give the family a shared name

Click the pencil next to the family name under Settings → Family. Both the owner and parents can rename it.

When both have children

If the other adult has children in their own family, they stay there after the invitation — a child profile can't be moved between families. You have two options:

  1. Create the children again in the shared family with “+ Add child profile”. It's the quickest for the youngest. History such as progress and completed routines stays in the old family.
  2. Give the children their own login and invite them as a Child in the shared family. Then they belong to both, and their school schedule and homework come along. See A child with two homes.

If the same child exists in both families, the two profiles can't be merged. Keep the one with the most history, and delete the other from the child's page under Settings → Family.

Routines, appointments and data

  • Stays with the family: routines, appointments, chores, allowance, notes, addresses and driving. Whatever is in the other adult's old family stays there.
  • Follows the person: profile, school schedule and homework.
  • New content is added to the family that's active when it's created.

Routines can't be moved between families. Create the routines you want to keep in the shared family — it only takes a few minutes. See Build a routine.

Subscription

Pro follows the family's owner. If you both pay for Pro, whoever no longer needs their own subscription has to cancel it under Settings → Subscription — it doesn't happen automatically. See Manage your subscription.

If the other person should pay instead, the owner can transfer ownership. See Manage roles and ownership in the family.

Good advice

  • Agree on who's the owner before you start. The owner's subscription is what keeps the family on Pro.
  • Check the active family before you create anything. If you're in your own group, new appointments end up there, not in the family.
  • Give every member their own colour. With more children in the house, calendars and lists get much easier to read.

If it doesn't work

  1. Can't invite? Check that the family has Pro and that you're the owner or a parent.
  2. Can't the other adult see the family's routines? Check that the invitation was accepted and that the family is chosen under Active family.
  3. Did a new appointment end up in the wrong family? It was created while another family was active. Delete it and create it again in the right family.
