Build a routine

A routine is a series of activities with fixed times. Here's how to build one from scratch — and get it to repeat itself.

In short: go to Routines in the web app, create a new routine, add the activities with a time, choose which days it should run, and assign it to the family members it applies to.

Before you start

It’s easiest to build routines in the web app, because you have the whole week in front of you on one screen. If you haven’t added your family yet, do that first — then you can assign the routine right away.

Step by step

  1. Open Routines in the menu

Log in at webapp.morgenrutine.dk and choose Routines in the left sidebar.

  2. Create a new routine

Give it a name your family recognises — “Weekday morning”, “Bedtime” or “Afternoon”. The name is what the kids see in the app.

  3. Add the activities

Add the activities in the order they happen: brushing teeth, getting dressed, breakfast, bag. Each activity gets its own time.

  4. Set the times

Start with the end time — when you need to be out the door — and work backwards. Add a couple of extra minutes to each activity, so the routine doesn't become a stress point.

  5. Choose repetition

Mark the days the routine should run. Weekdays for school mornings, weekends for the calmer days. The routine then shows up automatically on those days.

  6. Assign family members

Choose who the routine applies to. Assign it to several children, and each child gets their own checklist.

Once the routine is created, it shows up under Today’s overview on the homepage — and in the habit tracker, so you can follow streaks.

What it looks like on iOS

On the day, the iOS app shows the routine under Planning, and Doing shows the next routine with a countdown. The kids check off as they go, and progress is recorded automatically in both places.

Start with one routine. Once it sticks, build the next one. Three routines that get used beat eight that get ignored.

Good advice

  • Fewer steps is better. Five to seven activities is plenty. Any more, and the routine gets hard for a child to follow.
  • Use the names your child already uses. “Bag” instead of “Prepare school bag”.
  • Leave breathing room in the times. Add two extra minutes everywhere — so the routine also holds up on a bad morning.
  • Adjust after a week. See where it gets tight, and move the times. The routine is a template, not a contract.

If the routine doesn’t show up

Check these three things in order:

  1. Is the routine assigned to the right family member?
  2. Is the day marked in the repetition pattern?
  3. Are you logged in with the same account on web and iOS?

If all of that checks out and the routine is still missing, write to us — mention the routine’s name and which day it’s missing.
