New: homework with a plan, steps and a focus timer

Homework in Morgenrutine has been rebuilt. Homework now gets a plan, is split into small steps and is done with a focus timer – and each child gets the motivation that works for them.

Short answer: Add homework with just the subject. Morgenrutine puts it into a fixed homework time, splits it into steps and moves the time if sport comes up. Start homework opens the focus timer, and each piece of homework can climb four steps: added, done, on time and in good time.

1. Why homework needed rebuilding

Homework was a list of subjects and due dates. That’s fine for remembering, but it doesn’t help with the hard part: getting started, getting everything done on time, and staying motivated week after week.

So homework now gets the same as the meal plan: a plan that becomes a routine in the day – in Doing, the Weekly plan, Planning, the iOS app and on Apple TV.

2. A plan that moves

Each person gets a homework time for each weekday, e.g. 4 pm for 45 minutes. Steps go into the days before the due date, so big assignments are spread out. If football practice lands in the time, it moves to the next free time and shows “Moved because of Football”.

3. Help getting started

The hardest part is the first minute. That’s why every piece of homework starts with a small two-minute step, like getting the book out. Start homework opens the focus timer with one step at a time, breaks along the way and a one-tap mood. On iPhone the countdown shows on the lock screen.

4. Motivation that fits the child

Some children love a streak, others a reward, some want company, and others want to beat their own record. Each child picks one or two motivations, and the Homework page shows more of what works. Points can be exchanged for rewards you agree on – or pocket money.

5. Morgenrutine learns along the way

After a couple of weeks, Homework shows when things go best – e.g. on Tuesdays, after a break or between 3 and 5 pm – and suggests moving a homework time or adjusting the time for a type of homework.

6. Parents follow along – without approving

Parents see the whole family’s homework, send high-fives, answer “Do it together” and are notified at 6 pm if something due tomorrow isn’t done. And homework isn’t just for children: a parent who is studying can use all of it too.
